This is originally from my previous facebook group ‘India ’08,’ in which I sent messages to friends about my travels with Carpe Diem through India. This post was not originally associated with this blog, but I have put it up here in the correct date. As you can see, my writing is not quite up to par with what it is now 🙂 But I thought you readers would still find it informative and entertaining.

Greetings from Varanasi everyone! I have finally found a computer where facebook is properly working, so I’m taking advantage of the situation and letting you know what’s up. The 16 hour train ride to here was ridiculous, but luckily we took the sleeper train instead of the REGULAR train- let me just say if you ever come to India MAKE SURE to get a sleeper train. There are so many crazy things that have just happened here, so many amazing stories I have to tell everyone… watching a 4 year old solder a ring…an auto rickshaw breaking down on the way to the train station and Aleta having to get out and push it at a run to start the engine, multiple times… a transsexual on the train rubbing up against Sam, hoping Sam would pay him to go away (the lengths people go to to get money around here)… bargaining a 100 rupee paint set down to 30 for the fun of it… watching Dan try to row a boat on the Ganges river and succeeding in zigzagging to Assi Ghat… almost getting stampeded by a herd of cows, I mean the things that have happened are endless and so amusing, and so out of this world.

Sri Yoga Mandir

Right now we are staying at Sri Yoga Mandir, a very small ashram right on the Ganges River in Assi Ghat, Varanasi. We have been doing Yoga starting at 6:30 AM every day, followed by two hours of Hindi (Mai Hindustani nahi achcha hu- my Hindu is not good, and I probably wrote that incorrectly anyway), and then we have internships in the afternoon. Right now I’m doing jewelry-making, which is totally OUT of this world. Right now I’m learning how to make a ring, and I can’t wait to wear it and show it off to everyone 🙂 I am also taking a cooking class everyday- Last night we learned how to make Kofta Paneer, which is rice with this really delicious sauce.

I sat in on a tabla lesson in Varanasi yesterday and WOW it is different than Lucknow tabla for sure. I am getting to know everyone in the group better, and I’ve been having a lot of fun with everyone- There is so much to do in Varanasi, so many sights and smells, so many cows, goats, and stray dogs…. I also have learned to wash my clothes in a bucket and have been very unsuccessful in trying to get away from the constant barrage of mosquitos here, along with everyone else in the group. All in all I am having a fantastic time, although I am missing CalArts very much and the African Ensemble. I hope everyone is doing well and you are happy.

Much love and peace from the middle east!
