This is originally from my previous facebook group ‘India ’08,’ in which I sent messages to friends about my travels with Carpe Diem through India. This post was not originally associated with this blog, but I have put it up here in the correct date. As you can see, my writing is not quite up to par with what it is now 🙂 But I thought you readers would still find it informative and entertaining.

Hello everyone! It is my last day in Varanasi and we’re getting ready to pack up and head to Bodhgaya at 4 AM tomorrow morning. These past two weeks here have been unbelievable. The most recent things that have happened that have been amazingly awesome for me is going to an Indian wedding reception…it seriously is like a carnival, except it’s free, there’s amazing Indian food, ice cream, and cotton candy, a free classical indian concert, and every Indian boy will want to dance with you. The night soured quickly when one of my friends in the group got her bag stolen, but luckily they found her passport cleaning up after the party so all is not lost. Probably the best thing I’ve seen so far on my trip is a 4 hour classical Indian concert- literally blew my mind. We also have been having lectures from Professor MishraJi about Hindi philosophy and religion, and he is the most interesting and humbled person I have ever met…I could listen to him talk for hours. We’ve spent a few days here and there seeing parts of Varanasi, and my favorite place has become Fort RamNagar, which has this beautiful view of the Ganga River and it’s very peaceful to sit and relax…I spent about an hour there today just listening to Phish and watching the world go by. Group-wise, There have been a few ups and downs…we’ve all gotten sick at one point or another, physically and also from the food, and living with a group has proven to be an interesting challenge; but the upside is that we are learning how to live with one another and we’ve been very good with communication skills thus far so there hasn’t been many problems. Let’s see, what else… two four year old kids rowed Dan and I from one side of the Ganga River to the other, which I think is classic…

I finished making my ring, which I don’t think ANYONE will believe I made because it looks so perfect… and I also tried to jump in the Ganges River for the experience of it on my birthday, and instead was met with about 30 men defecating on the hillside down to the river, and immediately decided against it… My birthday here was probably the most unusual birthday I’ve ever had, but we still had cake and candles and sing-a-longs and group therapy discussions, and I splurged for the first time here to celebrate the end of my teenage years, so I can’t complain. I hope everyone is doing well and is happy and peaceful and now I have to leave because my stomach is refusing to let me have any peace and quiet for more than half an hour… much, much love,
