A National Tragedy in Paraguay

Yesterday at 9:00 AM, one of our fellow Peace Corps Volunteers, Emily Balog, passed away in a car accident. Though a year above me, Emily and I were in the same sector, Community Economic Development. Only last week we both worked together on the Kuat, our Peace Corps tri-annual magazine. She was the editor and did an incredible job- it’s our best edition yet. It is so hard to believe that she was here last week with us, and now she is suddenly gone. She was such a wonderful person, an amazing volunteer. It doesn’t make any sense to me. Emily’s passing has been a national tragedy in Paraguay. She has been all over the news today. Many volunteers are in the capital today to support each other.

If anything, it has shown us that you need to really do what you love with the time you have.

Tomorrow evening Peace Corps Paraguay will be holding a memorial service in honor of her. I expect at least 200 volunteers will attend. The entire Community Economic Development sector will be there to support each other. Please keep Emily, her family, her friends, and her g-mates in your thoughts and prayers.

This is truly devastating news, Brittany. My heart goes out to all of you, and to Emily’s family as well. Remarkably, earlier today I spent some time reading Emily’s blog and reflecting on her wonderful service and on the picture of her in the taxi’s back seat during that frightening ride. I had no idea of her tragic passing. Please accept my deepest condolences.

I am a PCV in the organizational and business development sector and travel a lot with my job. When I heard the news of Emily my heart sank. I am glad that PC is sharing this to all PCVs presently serving as we are after-all one big family. Thank you for sharing your story. I am glad to see that Paraguay is celebrating the life of Emily. She sounds like an amazing woman who died for her country by epitomizing JFK’s vision to serve through Peace and love. I hope I pass on one day on such a noble note as she did.
Best to you all.
PC Belize.
